Kukes historical

 The centre of the district of Kukes is the city with the same name Kukes . The historical course of our city speared in two stages: the first stage belongs.Ancient Kukes  and the second stage belongs New Kukes  which lies 3 km in north of Ancient Kukes. Ancient Kukes layover an terrace created from Black Drin and White Drin in the angle of their encounter. From the archeological information that we have is verified that Kukes was inhabited from Neolithic era (6000-4000 B.C). The first time that Kukes has fulgurated is at manuscripts of one Arab geographer called Al Idriz at hi act ,Ratabi Rudar, in which talks about river Drin in 1165 A.C . The name of our city has two origins and the most faithful is a inscription of language on a roof-tile in Pece (Kuekis). Kukes mentioned after 1165 A.C in different ecclesiastic document but after Turks occupation Kukes mentioned in 1610 A.C with over 50 houses and an destroyed church. Mortar that was fall in 1689 destroyed our city and it burned. The city will mention in the first half century XVIII when it repopulated again. Until 1922 A.C  the city was a small center. In august 1925 Kukes has been the center of Kosovo's Prefecture.

During the Second  World War it  invaded from Italian and than from German.  

It liberated from the Albanian partisans forces of Shock Brigade XVIII in 18 November 1944. In 1962 began the city's building and life developed parallels in two cities 3 km away from each other. In 1978 Ancient Kukes evacuated and over watered from the building of hydro power stations on the river Drin. New city with the same name Kukes has a height about 350m over sea's level and it had a large developing during the communist regime. After 1990 the most of Mineral Industry  was destroyed.  In 1999   Kukes had been   the main door for   500.000 refugees  and the main  accommodating   for 150.000  of  them

during the conflict in Kosovo. In 2000 Kukes has proposed for the "NOBEL "award for peace. Today Kukes has a population about 27.000 citizens and it has a favorable geographical position.
